Photographed in Vichères-Liddes in Valais Switzerland this image captures the Alps during one of those brief moments when changing winter weather creates something completely unexpected.

The composition is dominated by darkness.

Heavy cloud fills almost the entire sky while the lower mountain slopes remain subdued beneath soft blue-grey shadow. Across the centre of the photograph however a break in the weather allows sunlight to strike a single section of the snow-covered ridge.

The effect is almost theatrical.

The illuminated mountains appear to emerge from the darkness as the sunlight reveals steep gullies exposed rock and intricate patterns carved through the snow. Peaks immediately beside them remain partially hidden beneath cloud making the light feel even more concentrated.

Rather than presenting the Alps as a uniformly bright winter landscape this photograph captures their constantly changing character. Light can appear and disappear within minutes as clouds move across the high terrain transforming the same mountain from one moment to the next.
