Photographed in Vichères-Liddes in the Valais region of Switzerland this image captures the Swiss Alps during one of those fleeting moments when changing mountain weather completely transforms the landscape.

Most of the scene remains immersed in deep shadow. Rugged slopes descend toward dark alpine forest while patches of winter snow trace the contours of the rock. Above them the mountain summit rises toward a dense and imposing sky.

Then the light breaks through.

A narrow burst of sunlight catches the highest ridge and the clouds moving across it. Snow and mist become brilliantly illuminated against the darkness behind them creating an extraordinary natural spotlight around the summit.

The contrast gives the photograph an almost cinematic quality. Rather than presenting the Swiss Alps beneath perfect blue skies this image reveals their more powerful and unpredictable character where weather light altitude and landscape interact from one moment to the next.
