High in the Swiss Alps the landscape can transform within minutes. Mountains that dominate the horizon can suddenly disappear behind cloud before fragments of their slopes emerge again as the weather moves through the valley.

This photograph captures one of those fleeting transformations above Vichères-Liddes Switzerland.

Heavy cloud descends across the mountains obscuring the highest summit and leaving only glimpses of its rugged snow-covered face visible through the mist. Rather than revealing the landscape completely the weather becomes an essential part of the composition creating mystery and an extraordinary sense of scale.

Light provides the counterpoint.

Small breaks within the cloud allow shafts of winter sunlight to reach isolated sections of the mountains. Bright snow appears momentarily illuminated while surrounding ridges remain submerged in deep blue-grey shadow. These scattered highlights guide the eye through the landscape and reveal the complex layers of peaks hidden within the storm.

The foreground remains deliberately dark. A steep ridge rises from the lower right while overlapping mountains lead toward the partially concealed summit beyond. This progression from shadow into light gives the photograph remarkable depth and makes the distant mountain feel even more imposing.

Above the peaks a vast expanse of darkness dominates the composition.

The negative space is one of the photograph's defining characteristics. Instead of filling the frame entirely with mountain scenery the dark sky gives the landscape room to breathe while emphasizing how small even enormous mountains can appear beneath an approaching Alpine storm.
