This photograph carries a particularly personal story. In the quiet hours just before sunrise this turtle emerged from the Caribbean Sea and came ashore beside my tent to lay her eggs on an extraordinarily tiny island in San Blas Panama measuring only around 2m². With almost nowhere else to go she chose this small patch of sand for the next generation of sea turtles.

It was approximately 5am in the San Blas Islands of Panama when this extraordinary visitor appeared beside my tent.

The island itself was barely an island at all — a tiny patch of sand measuring approximately 2m² surrounded by the Caribbean Sea. During the night this sea turtle had travelled from the water onto the sand to find a place to lay her eggs.

By sunrise she was still there.

Photographed at ground level the turtle fills much of the frame allowing the intricate textures of her shell face and powerful flippers to become the focus of the composition. Sand remains visible across her skin and shell creating a tangible connection between the animal and the nesting beach beneath her.

There is something particularly moving about encountering wildlife in circumstances like this. There were no viewing platforms and no carefully planned wildlife photography setup. It was simply an unexpected meeting between traveller and turtle on one of the smallest islands imaginable.

The soft early morning light gives the photograph its warm muted palette. Gentle sandy tones complement the natural greens and browns of the turtle while the shallow depth of field isolates her against the beach.

Her enormous front flippers stretch across the sand while her weathered shell and textured skin reveal the physical character of an animal whose life is spent travelling through the ocean before returning to land to nest.

Beyond its visual beauty the photograph tells a story of migration instinct and survival. Sea turtles spend most of their lives at sea yet females must return to land to bury their eggs in the sand. On this particular morning that ancient instinct brought this turtle to a remarkably small island in the Caribbean.
