About the Photograph
Print: #501 Location: Costa Rica Rainforest
Original photograph by Chantelle Flores, captured during her adventures across 89 countries, documenting remarkable landscapes, cultures, and destinations from around the world.
Sometimes the most memorable wildlife encounters begin with something almost completely hidden.
Photographed in the rainforest of Costa Rica this image captures a red-eyed tree frog peering cautiously from behind a broad tropical stem.
Only part of the frog is visible.
Its brilliant green face emerges from the darkness.
One extraordinary red eye catches the light.
Tiny flashes of orange from its feet appear beneath the leaf.
Everything else disappears into the deep shadows of the rainforest.
That restraint is what gives the photograph its character.
Rather than presenting the animal completely the composition allows the frog to reveal itself gradually.
The viewer notices the eye first.
Then the luminous green skin.
Then the second eye hidden near the edge.
And finally those unmistakable orange toes wrapped around the vegetation.
It creates the feeling of discovering the frog rather than simply observing it.
The red-eyed tree frog is one of the most recognizable amphibians of the Central American rainforest. Its vivid green body dramatic red eyes orange feet and flashes of blue along its sides have made it an extraordinary symbol of tropical biodiversity.
Yet in its natural environment those colors have another effect entirely.
Against the darkness of dense vegetation they appear almost luminous.
That contrast is beautifully captured here.
Much of the composition is deliberately dark.
Deep forest greens move into near-black shadow while the vegetation creates strong vertical lines through the photograph.
Against them the frog becomes a tiny explosion of color.
Emerald green.
Burning orange.
Brilliant red.
The limited palette gives the photograph a cinematic quality and makes the animal feel almost suspended within the darkness.
There is also something wonderfully expressive about the encounter.
The frog appears to be watching.
Its eye emerges around the vegetation while the rest of its body remains concealed creating a sense of curiosity and personality that makes the image immediately engaging.
The generous negative space surrounding the animal strengthens that effect.
Instead of filling the frame the frog occupies only a small portion of it.
The surrounding darkness becomes part of the composition giving the photograph mystery depth and atmosphere.
Within an interior this creates a very different feeling from traditional brightly colored tropical wildlife imagery.
The photograph is sophisticated.
Moody.
Unexpected.
Its dark tones work particularly well in contemporary interiors while the flashes of green red and orange provide just enough color to command attention.
From across the room the composition appears almost abstract.
Move closer and suddenly the frog reveals itself.
That moment of discovery is what makes the photograph so compelling.
It captures one of Costa Rica's most iconic rainforest inhabitants exactly where it belongs — partially hidden among the leaves and shadows of the tropical forest.
