Photographed in Ticino Switzerland this image captures the quieter and more heavily forested character of the country's southern Alpine landscape.

A sharply defined mountain summit rises above the trees at the top of the composition while layer after layer of forest descends through the valley below.

The mountain itself is only part of the story.

Light moves through the landscape in narrow bands.

Some ridges remain almost completely hidden in shadow while others catch warm late-day sunlight along the tops of the trees. That changing illumination creates extraordinary depth and allows individual sections of forest to emerge from the darkness.
