There are moments in the Alps when the mountains seem to disappear completely.

Cloud moves rapidly through the high valleys obscuring ridges and summits until only fragments of the landscape remain visible. Then for a few seconds the weather shifts and light finds its way through.

This photograph captures precisely that moment above Vichères-Liddes Switzerland.

The mountain rises through layers of mist with its upper reaches almost completely swallowed by cloud. Rather than revealing the entire summit the photograph leaves much of the landscape unresolved. Peaks emerge and disappear creating a sense of mystery that draws the eye deeper into the scene.

A break in the clouds allows sunlight to strike part of the snow-covered mountainside. Against the surrounding blue-grey shadows the illuminated snow becomes almost luminous.
