Captured on the coast of Cyprus this photograph records the Mediterranean under dramatically different conditions from the brilliant blue skies normally associated with the island.

A vast storm system has transformed the familiar seascape into something dark cinematic and almost abstract. Heavy clouds fill nearly the entire composition leaving only a narrow band of ocean beneath them.

At the centre of the storm a brilliant opening in the clouds allows sunlight to penetrate the darkness. Rays descend through layers of cloud creating subtle columns of illumination before disappearing into the turbulent atmosphere below.

Along the distant horizon another band of light appears beneath the storm. This luminous strip separates the enormous cloud formation from the dark Mediterranean and gives the image an extraordinary sense of depth and scale.

The tiny distant vessel visible against the horizon becomes an important part of the composition. Almost disappearing beneath the immense weather system it provides a human sense of scale and emphasizes just how enormous the storm appears over the open water.

Closer to the foreground small white waves interrupt the deep blue-black surface of the sea while subtle reflections reveal texture within the darkness.
