There are moments in the mountains when light completely transforms the landscape. A slope that had been hidden beneath cloud suddenly becomes illuminated while everything surrounding it remains submerged in darkness.

This photograph captures one of those fleeting moments in Vichères-Liddes Switzerland.

Across the lower half of the composition the mountains rise from a valley filled with drifting mist. Dense forests create dark textured patterns across the slopes while the upper snowfields catch the available sunlight and appear almost luminous against the approaching weather.

The contrast is striking.

Bright snow stretches across the central ridgeline while the foreground gradually disappears into shadow. Low cloud threads through the valley separating the illuminated mountains from the darker terrain below and creating a remarkable sense of depth.

Above everything is the sky.

The enormous expanse of darkness occupying much of the composition gives the photograph its distinctive character.
